Why Does Shoji Wear A Mask

My Hero Academia is a popular superhero shonen anime where gifted students can attend elite schools like UA Pro Hero someday, complete with their own costumes and names. The students of Class 1-A have designed all kinds of cool getups for themselves, but Shoji Mezo's in particular has an oddity about it. Whether he's in costume or not, the tall, six-armed Shoji always wears a face mask covering his nose, mouth and ears, and has yet to reveal what is underneath. He has his personal reasons, and the decision to keep his face partially covered may also be due to unfortunate societal norms as well. Shoji lives in a world that hasn't been so welcoming of his true nature. RELATED: My Hero Academia: Did Hatsume Mei Just Become Best Girl? Shoji Mezo started wearing a face mask even before enrolling at UA, and had to design his own hero costume. His personal experiences prompted this, though he has never explained why in the My Hero Academia anime -- even to more sympathetic classmates like Asui Tsuyu or Uraraka Ochaco. Shoji's peers accept his face mask as a fact of life, but they don't realize he is ashamed of his face and might even unfairly view himself as a monster or a freak.

Where he grew up, he was widely disliked for his mutated appearance -- a young girl even burst into tears at the sight of him. This prompted Shoji to accommodate others and cover his true face, at the cost of his personal expression and authenticity. Having worn face masks ever since, Shoji evidently believes this is a fair price to pay to keep discrimination and alienation at bay. Thus far he has not seen fit to remove his mask under any circumstances, and he doesn't even speak with his mouth at all. Instead, Shoji is well-known for forming an auxiliary mouth with one of his six arms to speak, and no one questions it. His classmates are gracious enough to keep their questions and comments to themselves, and deep down, they might have already realized the truth of Shoji's face mask and his use of auxiliary mouths. Asui in particular would know about that, since she once had a classmate with a terrifying snake head. Perhaps she just needed one glance at Shoji to realize what he was going through.

For now, Shoji Mezo has not accepted his true self and hides behind a partial mask.

Supernatural Quirks are a fact of life for most people in My Hero Academia, but the tragic reality is that not all Quirks are created equal. Many are quick to judge, fear or even alienate others based on their Quirks, especially mutant-types like Shoji's. This is roughly similar to the stigma against being Quirkless, showing that as a society, many people still aren't ready to fully accept one another for who they are. Even the villain from My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, Flect Turn, knows what Shoji is going through. Flect's odd blue skin and reflection-based Quirk made him an outcast, which in turn inspired his villainous schemes. From Midoriya Izuku coming to grips with his Quirkless status, to Todoroki Shoto trying to figure out his relationship to his own power, and even Kirishima Eijiro's struggle to accept his "boring" Quirk for what it is, self-acceptance is a major theme in My Hero Academia. For now, Shoji Mezo has not accepted his true self and hides behind a partial mask. But if he aims to become a truly great hero one day, he must shed that mask and all its painful emotional baggage. Shoji's greatest breakthrough moment is still ahead of him.

They are battleships in the shape of confectionery tarts, hence their names, and they compose the majority of Big Mom's fleet. Any unauthorized ships sighted by them are immediately shot down. Territorial sea slugs are scattered across the immediate sea, and send out warning signals to Den Den Mushi to warn visitors and alert whatever Tarteship is within reach. When called upon, Tartes can leave their designated posts and join battles at the best of the Big Mom Pirates. Several of them were destroyed by Daifuku's genie when it attempted to kill Carrot. Totto Land is most notable for being home to members of almost every race and tribe in the world, as Big Mom claims to desire a utopia where all races and species can live in harmony.

The known races that inhabit Totto Land are humans, fish-men, merfolk, minks, snakenecks, longarms, longlegs, dwarves, three-eyes, along with several hybrids of different races. Strangely, living objects (such as furniture, ships, food, etc.) as well as talking animals that are not clearly minks or Zoan fruit users also live in Totto Land. These living objects and talking animals are referred to as "homies", and were essentially brought to life and given human-like traits by Big Mom's Soru Soru no Mi. Big Mom also has a liking for collecting rare and unique animals for her own amusement. By law, all the citizens of Totto Land must donate one month of their lifespan every six months as a fee for Big Mom's protection or else they must leave. However, Brûlée and Praline claimed that Linlin would never allow anyone to leave Totto Land alive, meaning a death penalty may be imposed to anyone who attempts to leave. Despite the diversity of the races within the archipelago, there are no giants living there; this is because every giant in the world despises Big Mom after she wreaked havoc on Elbaf due to her eating disorder, and after a failed attempt to reconcile with them, which only further deepened their animosity for her, she effectively gave up on trying to bring them over to her side, deciding instead to use scientists like Caesar Clown to create her own giants. Aside from giants, lesser known races such as Sky People, Kinokobito, and the Three-Eye Tribe are never seen living in Totto Land in abundance either, with the only known Kinokobito being a prisoner of Big Mom's and the only known Three-Eye ( Charlotte Pudding) being reviled and discriminated by the population until she was forced to hide her third eye.
