Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito) is a member of the Uchiha clan from Konohagakure. He is believed to have died during the Third Shinobi World War, his only surviving legacy being the Sharingan he gave to his teammate, Kakashi Hatake. Actually, Obito was saved from death and trained by Madara Uchiha, but the events of the war left Obito disillusioned with reality, and he inherited Madara's plan to create an ideal world. Operating under the names Tobi (トビ, Tobi) and Madara Uchiha himself, Obito subtly took control of Akatsuki, using them as tools to further his goals, eventually revealing his identity to the public and starting the Fourth Shinobi World War. However, towards the end of the war, Obito regained his senses and, as redemption, sacrificed his life to save the world he had been trying to destroy. Obito arrived just as the entrance ceremony ended. Obito grew up not knowing who his parents were; In the anime, he is left in the care of his grandmother. Feeling alone in the world, Obito dreams of becoming Hokage so that the villagers will acknowledge his existence. He enrolls in the Academy to help him achieve that goal, where he begins a one-sided rivalry with Kakashi Hatake, whose natural talent and popularity he is jealous of.
He also becomes a close friend of Rin Nohara, whom he ends up falling in love with. After finally graduating several years later, Obito, Rin, and Kakashi were placed on a team under the leadership of Minato Namikaze. In the anime, as a final qualifying test, Minato gave the team a bell test to test their cooperative abilities. Obito could not achieve this alone, but by joining forces with Rin and Kakashi, they managed to retrieve the bell, teaching Obito the value of teamwork. The team later participated in the Chūnin Exams, where Obito was defeated in the third round in a one-on-one match with Might Guy. Kakashi defeats Guy in the next match, promoting him to Chūnin and impressing Rin. Eager to gain Rin's attention, Obito trained relentlessly, eventually rising to the rank of Chūin himself. His joy was short-lived as Kakashi soon became a jōnin, and once again earned Rin's praise and Obito's hatred. During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi was placed in charge of the team to destroy the Kannabi Bridge, which would prevent Iwagakure from using Kusagakure as a safe point.

Before starting his mission, Minato and Rin gave Kakashi a gift to celebrate his promotion to jōnin, Obito even "forgetting", forcing their relationship to sour. Minato was immediately summoned to the front lines, leaving the team to complete the mission alone under Kakashi's command. The three are found by the Iwa ninja along the way and Rin is captured. Kakashi chose to leave Rin, believing that it was more important to complete the mission before thinking about the safety of their friend. Obito became angry at the idea and insisted that they should focus on saving him. When Kakashi refused, Obito left alone, commenting that Kakashi was worse than trash for abandoning his friends. Obito found the cave the Iwa-nin used as a hiding place, but was caught by the camouflaged Taiseki before he could make a rescue. Kakashi, moved by Obito's initial words, arrived in time to save him from Taiseki's attack, but lost his left eye in the process. From his desire to help Kakashi, Obito awakened his Sharingan, which allowed him to see through Taiseki's disguise and kill him. Obito and Kakashi infiltrated the cave and released Rin from her restraints. Due to Rin's release, Kakkō, causes the cave to collapse around them. As the team ran outside, Kakashi was hit by a rock in the blind spot and fell. When Obito saw that Kakashi was about to be hit by a falling rock, Obito pushed him out of the way and stuck in his place. Obito is trapped under a boulder. With the right side of his body crushed and no way to free himself, Obito accepted his destiny and made a bid: to give Kakashi his left Sharingan as an apology for not giving him the gift earlier.
39;t admit to Rin that he loves him.
Rin performed the transplant and, after the procedure was completed, Kakashi used his new Sharingan to kill Kakkō. Iwa quickly started dropping rocks, forcing Kakashi and Rin to leave Obito. As the rocks close around him, Obito contemplates that he has finally started hanging out with Kakashi and that he can't admit to Rin that he loves him. Kakashi and Rin were saved by Minato and, when they returned to Konoha, Obito's name was engraved on the village's Memorial Stone. Actually, Obito was saved by White Zetsu under the orders of old Madara. He took Obito to the Mountain Graveyard and treated his wounds, removing body parts that were too damaged to heal and replacing them with limbs cultivated from Hashirama Senju's cells. Despite his injuries, Obito's right Sharingan survived and was intact. Although frightened by Madara, Obito feels indebted to him for saving his life and is willing to provide any help he can, Madara later makes an offer he cannot refuse. Obito began a long rehabilitation process, wanting to recover enough for him to return to Konoha and help his friends and village with the ongoing war. With the help of White Zetsu and Spiral-faced Zetsu nicknamed Guruguru, Obito became accustomed to the alternate limbs and the abilities they gave him. Meanwhile, Madara told Obito about the reality of the cruel world and his plans to save it, but according to the young Uchiha it was not important. Obito mourns Rin's death. During the end of his healing process, White Zetsu informed Obito that Kakashi and Rin were elsewhere and would be killed by the Kirigakure ninja. Obito insists on helping them, Guruguru offers to help by wrapping Obito in his body.
Before departing, Obito thanked Madara for all his help but said that he would not be returning. Madara reiterated his belief that Obito would return to him. Guruguru directs Obito to Rin and Kakashi's location, along the way he asks about Minato's absence. When they arrived they found Rin and Kakashi surrounded by Kiri-nin and Kakashi thrust his Chidor through Rin's heart. Rin's death caused each of their Sharingan to transform into a Mangekyō Sharingan, a process which also caused Kakashi to faint. Enraged by what had happened, Obito used a combination of the Kamui Mangekyō Sharingan and the Wood Release from Guruguru's body to slaughter the Kirigakure ninja. When all of them died, Obito hugged Rin's lifeless body, ignoring the unconscious Kakashi. Obito returned to the Mountain Tomb, promising to do anything for Madara if he could bring him together with Rin and Kakashi again. Madara explains his Eye of the Moon Plan, which will replace the mortal world with this violence and death where no one needs to die.
Obito and Zetsu meet Nagato.
Obito is intrigued, determined to create a reality where he, Rin, and Kakashi can live next to each other. Madara passed on all of his knowledge and plans to Obito, taught him about the abilities he needed to move forward, entrusted him with his belongings, and manifested Black Zetsu to act as a guide. After leaving behind almost everything Obito needed, Madara was cut off from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path that kept him alive and told Obito that until his resurrection, he would act as Madara Uchiha. Obito and Zetsu meet Nagato. Using Madara's name and hiding his identity, Obito moves in the shadows of the ninja world to execute the pieces of the Eye of the Moon Plan. Shortly after Madara's death, Obito and Zetsu traveled to Amegakure and approached the young Akatsuki group with an offer of support in creating the world peace they dreamed of. Actually he only needed Nagato, where Madara had implanted his Rinnegan years earlier and who would be needed in the final stages of the Eye of the Moon Plan. While Obito could almost control Nagato, the leader of Akatsuki, Yahiko, refused; Obito then admitted Yahiko agreed without telling the other Akatsuki members. In the anime, Obito learns of a conspiracy between Hanzō and Danzō Shimura to kill Yahiko. He intercepted and killed the Akatsuki members who were trying to save Yahiko and once Yahiko died, pushing Nagato in a new direction for the organization, namely focusing on gathering tailed beasts.
While Nagato became the leader of Akatsuki and recruited powerful ninja for their cause, Obito used the alias "Tobi", and changed his personality to hide his identity. In Kirigakure, Obito at some point took control of the Fourth Mizukage, essentially making him the de facto Mizukage. After Kisame Hoshigaki became disillusioned with the world's lies, Obito (as "Madara") revealed himself to Kisame and promised to help make the world true. Kisame became a loyal servant, one of the few Kiri-nin who worked consciously for him. During this time Obito finally learned the cause of Rin's death: Kiri had sealed the Three-Tails into his body to turn it into a ticking time bomb that would destroy Konoha. At Rin's urging, Kakashi kills him to prevent this from happening. Obito's manipulation of the Mizukage was finally discovered by Ao and he was forced to leave. Twelve years before the start of the series, Obito visited Rin's grave in Konoha. Kakashi was already there when he arrived and Obito, watching silently, heard him tell Rin's grave that Minato's wife, Kushina Uzumaki, was about to give birth. Knowing that Kushina was the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki and that the seal guarding the Nine-Tails contained within it would weaken during childbirth, Obito tracked her down on the night of October 10.
He killed his Anbu bodyguards and midwives, including the Third Hokage's wife, and took his newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki, hostage to prevent Minato from interfering. Minato was able to take Naruto away from him, but distracted him long enough for Obito to escape with Kushina. He took the Nine-Tails from its body, put it under his control with his Sharingan, and ordered it to destroy the village of Konoha. Obito and Minato fight. Minato soon after that came to help defend the village. Before Minato could contribute much or even tell who and what had happened, Obito found him and tried to use Kamui to drive him away and prevent further disturbance. Minato managed to escape with the Flying Thunder God Technique, but Obito chased after him. Minato didn't recognize Obito when they confronted him, instead suspecting him to be Madara Uchiha. He initially struggled to successfully attack Obito but, after several failed attacks, Minato ended up hitting him with a Rasengan and marking him with the Flying Thunder God seal, allowing him to head towards Obito whenever he wanted. He then used the Contract Seal on Obito to release the Nine-Tails from its control. Injured and deprived of his best weapon, Obito fled.
Years later, the Uchiha clan, as a result of the injustice they received, began plotting a coup.
Minato gave his life to save the village by sealing the Nine-Tails into his son, and thus never had a chance to tell anyone about Obito's involvement. Konoha's leadership remained suspicious of the Uchiha's involvement, and for that placed all members of the clan under close surveillance. Obito and Itachi plotted to massacre their clan. Years later in the anime, Obito attacked the Fire Daimy convoy on its way to Konoha, putting everyone in a genjutsu and killing Tenma Izumo, but quickly retreated after sensing Kakashi approaching. Years later, the Uchiha clan, as a result of the injustice they received, began plotting a coup. Obito returned to the village with the aim of exacerbating the conflict, but was found by Itachi Uchiha. Believing Obito to be Madara, Itachi enlisted his help in wiping out the Uchiha clan, seeking revenge against the Uchiha for their treatment of Madara decades earlier in exchange for Obito's consent to stay away from the village. Obito accepted and offered Itachi a position in Akatsuki. In the anime, on the night of the massacre, he massacred the Konoha Military Police Force and killed Izumi Uchiha. After that, he collected several Uchiha corpses to retrieve their Sharingan for his own use.
He also met Danzō around this time, for unknown reasons. After the attack, he cut his hair and brought Itachi into his organization. Obito helps the elderly villagers. Because he grew up without knowing his parents, Obito's childhood was filled with his dream of being recognized. This motivated him to become a ninja so that he could, in turn, become Hokage and eventually the whole village knew him. When Rin admits herself, Obito falls in love with her and aims to earn her love in addition to the title of Hokage. But Kakashi's presence, both in class and later in their team, became a wall for Obito, as Kakashi was naturally more talented than he was and, without trying, earned Rin's attention. Despite his general kindness and unwavering loyalty to his friends and allies, Obito nevertheless formed a one-sided rivalry with Kakashi. If he didn't compete with Kakashi, Obito would be known to do random good deeds around Konoha, especially to his parents, which in turn made him often late. This combination of heart factor and Obito's natural optimism made it easy for Madara to exploit and ultimately undermine him. Obito showed Kakashi how empty the world had left him. After Rin's death, Obito's determination and idealism fell apart. He became calmer and more focused, no longer caring about his village, his friends, or even his name, all of whom were worthless parts of the miserable world that had forced Rin to die at the hands of the people he loved. His only commitment is Madara's Eye of the Moon Plan and the new world of peace it will create; Every evil is a necessary evil, every murder is a sacrifice for the greater good and life to be restored in the new world.
